Sheep in the City - artwork by Beatrice Waanders of The Soft World

Beatrice Waanders of The Soft World makes beautiful interior products of wool. She roams the Netherlands in search of special breeds of sheep and uses the wool to make pillows, blankets and rugs by felting. She uses the wool in their natural color.

In the Atrium of City Hall in The Hague is a particular work of art from her exhibited: Sheep in the City. To be seen until June 13. Yesterday I went there.

In the middle of the atrium hangs a huge cotton cloth felted-in with raw wool. The wool is from an old Dutch sheep breed, the "Drents heideschaap", that maintain the landscape at The Hague in the dunes. The soft wool and fabric form a contrast with the hard concrete and glass architecture. It's a wonderful combination of hard and soft. The colors of the wool, white and shades of gray, fit perfectly with the building.

Yesterday the weather was working great with the artwork: a blue sky with white clouds, which sometimes bathed the hall in sunshine and sometimes the colors were more subdued as it was clouded. A beautiful interplay of light and color.

In the hall is a corner made with a classic sofa of the designer Martin Visser which is coated with felted raw wool. The curls and some straws are still in it. Around the couch are lying felted raw fleece. Sitting on the couch you can see a film in which the designer explains her design.

Felted hearts

At home I have a few felted hearts I made last winter. I made them as a reminder to be kind to myself. That I do not always need to set high standards for myself. That I may well take care of myself.
It all comes together in this heart shape, the soft wool and bright colors.

My friend liked them so much, she wanted one for her birthday. So I made her three in her favourite colour, green. She was very pleased when I gave them last week.
Made of merinowool and some silk fibers.
